A strained U.S. power grid is standing in the way of some of the Trump administration’s biggest priorities, from bringing massive AI data centers online to reshoring American manufacturing. The decade-long timeline for building traditional transmission lines is one of the biggest bottlenecks.
A suite of advanced transmission technologies has the potential to boost grid capacity more quickly. However, they aren’t yet being deployed at scale. Latitude Media broke the news that President Donald Trump is currently sitting on a draft executive order that would encourage the use of ATTs, which can increase the capacity of existing transmission lines by between 10% and 100% in just a couple of years. But would an executive order be enough to accelerate adoption, or is there more that federal and state regulators can do?
In this Latitude Dispatch, we’ll talk to Julia Selker, executive director of the WATT Coalition, about policies that support advanced transmission technologies.
We’ll dig into:
- How hyperscalers’ speed-to-power push and pledge to pay for grid infrastructure can apply to advanced transmission technology, and where that model is already underway.
- Whether Trump’s draft executive order could help speed up the deployment of ATTs.
- What the Department of Energy is already doing, and the potential impact of that work.
- What policies can shift financial incentives toward greater grid utilization?
Who should attend:
- Electric utilities and regulators
- Hyperscale, co-location, and enterprise data center operators
- Energy policy stakeholders
- Project finance professionals
- Grid technologists
